How do I create automatic page numbers in Adobe® InDesign®?
To have Adobe® InDesign® automatically number your pages, if the template isn’t used, use automatic page numbering on the Master page of the document.
- Go to the Master Pages by clicking on the Master in the Pages palette.
- Using the Type tool, draw a text frame in the general area for the page numbers.
- InDesign CS4: Choose Type > Insert Special Character > Markers > Current Page Number.
- InDesign CS3: Choose Type > Insert Special Character > Markers > Auto Page Number.
- InDesign CS2 and CS: Choose Type > Insert Special Character > Auto Page Number.
- The keyboard shortcut will also add a page number marker
- Windows: Ctrl+Alt+Shift+N
- Mac: Command+Option+Shift+N
The page marker will show up in the text block as a capital A for A-Master.
- It will be a B if you have a B-Master.
- This text can be formatted like any other text on your pages.
- Select the Selection tool and move the copy block into the correct position.
- Click on a page in the Pages palette to go to a page in your file and the actual page number will appear.
- If the page icons do not have the correct page numbers on them:
- Click on the first page of your file in the Pages palette.
- Select Numbering Section Options from the Pages palette pop-up menu.
- If Start Section does not have a check mark next to it, click on it to add one.
- Select Start Page Numbering at:.
- Type your starting page number in this field.
- Click OK.
