How do I create a grid template in Adobe® InDesign®?

A page layout created with grids allows you great flexibility with your design elements. Grids can be created quickly in InDesign.

Setting up grids

  • Go to Edit > Preferences > Grids
  • In the Document Grid section
    • Color sets the color of the gridlines
      • Use the default color or choose another color from the drop-down list
  • Horizontal and Vertical sections
    • Gridline Every are the major gridlines and are slightly darker
      • This example is using the default of 6 picas
      • A darker gridline is drawn every 6 picas
    • Subdivisions specifies the amount of space between the major gridlines
      • This example is using 6
      • The 6 pica major gridline is divided into six sections
      • A gridline will be created every 1 pica
  • Keep Grids in Back checked so the gridlines don't interfere with drawing the layout
  • Click OK

To make the gridlines appear on the screen

  • Go to View > Guides & Grids > Show Document Grid
