A lengthy but well-written colophon tells the tale of a concept much discussed, oft discouraged and, in the end, rightfully revered. After several one-words themes, the staff struggled with the challenge to do something new and different for their readers and with their comfort (and success) in creatively developing a single word into a unifier with significant impact. Their success with this volume is obvious in the details: the warm color palette, overlapping circular graphics and a distinctive slab serif font with circular terminals to echo the shape provide maximum impact. Traditional sections are renamed with appropriate verbs which suggest growth or change in each category, and traditional photo packages and copy blocks are supplemented by mods including lots of quotes, small candids, brief interviews and other quick-read formats that add both personal and year-specific details to the story of the year.
