The colophon and staff pages detail the myriad thought processes behind the theme. Alone, any of them would have been sufficiently high in impact, but layered? It’s almost mind-boggling. The mascot at Salem is the Spartan, and the staff was seeking a look very different from the textures that typified the previous volume. The conversation hit upon the double meaning of the desired look/the mascot and went wild from there. So, it’s about identity and being able to identify. It’s about being one of the group and yet being an individual. What better way to portray those attributes than to create a book that has enough consistencies to be clearly cohesive and enough visual variety to provide new and different treatments on every spread? With a trio of versatile fonts and some guidelines for spacing, capitalization and use of color, they set out to tell as many of the year’s stories as possible using an approach that’s fresh and different.
