Because the opening of a new school made such noticeable differences at Heritage, the staff felt that the theme needed to address it. By covering not only the visible and quantifiable changes (less students, less teachers, less cars in the parking lot), but also the qualitative ones (more opportunities, more spirit, more space), they showcased the duality of the situation. Logically, there’s a “More” spread followed by the “Less” spread in the opening. On each, every single caption includes the appropriate theme word and plenty of details to show that the reporters had done their homework. As the opening concluded, they revealed the real theme: “Less is More.” When it came to dividers, they covered both aspects of the section but presented a full-bleed dominant which contrasted greatly with the layers of diverse coverage found alongside the traditional copy blocks and photo clusters on the content spreads.
